  6. SS Republic Shipwreck Half Dollar

    SS Republic Shipwreck Half Dollar

SS Republic was a sidewheel steamship, lost in a hurricane off the coast of Georgia in October 1865, en route to New Orleans. The ship was carrying passengers and a cargo of $400,000 in coins, mostly in gold $10 and $20 pieces, intended for use as hard currency after the Civil War. In August 2003, the wreck of the Republic was located about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Savannah, Georgia, in about 1,700 feet (500 meters) of water. A salvage effort recovered about one-third of the rare 19th century gold and silver coins carried aboard, worth an estimated $75 million. We are very excited to be able to offer some of these rare Seated Liberty Half Dollars recovered from the wreck of the SS Republic. All coins are graded by the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation (NGC). The coins we have available range in date, from 1855-1860 and were all struck from the New Orleans and Philadelphia mint. These coins come individually packaged in a book which tells the entire story of the SS Republic. These are amongst the most unique and special coins we have ever had the pleasure of offering.
